“Namāmi Śamisān Nirvan Rupam, Vibhum Vyāpakam Brahma Veda Swarūpam”— Rudrashtakam by Goswami Tulsidas
Shiva is the Destroyer and Transformer in the Trimūrti. He is simultaneously the supreme ascetic and the ideal householder, the cosmic dancer and the stillness of meditation. In Shaivite traditions, He is Mahādeva — the Supreme Being.
One of the Trimūrti — the three principal deities. Shiva is the Adiyogi (first yogi) who transmitted the science of yoga to the Saptarishis. He manifested as the Jyotirlinga — a column of infinite light — to establish his supremacy.
