History

Ancient temple glorified by all 12 Alvars. Ramanuja spent his final years here. The temple survived invasions; the idol was hidden for decades during Sultanate attacks. Seven concentric enclosures (prakarams).

🏛️ Architecture

156 acres with 7 prakarams (concentric walls), 21 gopurams. The Rajagopuram (main tower) is 72 meters tall — one of the tallest in Asia. The temple functions as a small city.

Visiting Information

Open 6 AM–1 PM, 3:15 PM–9 PM. Located on an island in the Kaveri river. The temple complex is so large it contains homes, shops, and streets within its walls.
