चत्वारि वेदाः
The Vedas are the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, composed in Vedic Sanskrit over 3,500 years ago. They form the foundation of Hindu philosophy, ritual, and spiritual practice.
Each Veda serves a unique purpose: Rigveda for hymns of praise, Samaveda for melodies, Yajurveda for ritual formulas, and Atharvaveda for daily life and healing. Together, they contain the complete spiritual wisdom of ancient India.
ऋग्वेद
Knowledge of Verses
The oldest and most important Veda, containing 1,028 hymns (suktas) organized into 10 books (mandalas). It is the foundation of Hindu philosophy and ritual.
सामवेद
Knowledge of Melodies
The Veda of melodies and chants. It is the foundation of Indian classical music, transforming Rigvedic verses into musical compositions sung during Soma sacrifices.
यजुर्वेद
Knowledge of Sacrifice
The Veda of ritual formulas and sacrificial procedures. Contains prose mantras (yajus) used by Adhvaryu priests during Vedic ceremonies.
अथर्ववेद
Knowledge of Atharvan
The Veda of daily life, healing, and philosophy. Unlike the ritual-focused first three Vedas, it addresses everyday concerns including medicine, magic, and domestic rituals.
Each Veda traditionally contains four layers of texts, representing a progression from ritual action to spiritual wisdom.
Core collection of mantras and hymns
Prose commentaries explaining rituals
Forest texts for contemplation
Philosophical treatises on spiritual wisdom
