The first of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Destroyed and rebuilt 17 times throughout history — an enduring symbol of Hindu resilience and faith.
Traditional origin attributed to Soma (Moon god) who built a golden temple here. Repeatedly destroyed by invaders from Mahmud of Ghazni (1026 CE) onward. The current temple was rebuilt after Indian independence, championed by Sardar Patel.
