Where Muruga defeated the demon Surapadman in the defining battle. The only coastal Arupadai Veedu. Ancient temple with Sangam-era references.

History

One of the most ancient Muruga temples with references in Sangam literature (Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai by Nakkeerar). Survived Dutch occupation (1646-1648). The seaside setting marks the battlefield where Muruga fought Surapadman.

🏛️ Architecture

Seaside Dravidian temple with a nine-story rajagopuram. The sanctum is partially underground (reached by descending steps). The temple faces the sea — Muruga faces the direction of his victory.

Open 5 AM–1 PM, 4 PM–9 PM. Located on the coast near Thoothukudi. The beach adjacent to the temple is sacred. Best visited during Skanda Sashti (Oct-Nov).
