Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple

Guruvayur, Kerala

Called the "Dwarka of the South." Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri composed the Narayaneeyam here in 1586 CE — a 1,036-verse summary of the Bhagavata Purana — and was cured of severe rheumatism upon completion.

History

The deity was originally worshipped by Vasudeva and installed at this location by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu. One of the richest and most important temples in Kerala.

🏛️ Architecture

Traditional Kerala-style temple with the double-story sreekovil. The deity is Guruvayurappan — four-armed baby Krishna (Chaturbhuja form) holding conch, disc, mace, and lotus.
