The most sacred Shiva temple and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Shiva is believed to whisper the Taraka Mantra to every soul that dies in Kashi, granting moksha (liberation).
Ancient origins; destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The current temple was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was inaugurated by PM Modi in 2021, transforming the approach.
Three domes, the main one gold-plated (donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839 — 1,000 kg of gold). The new corridor provides a grand approach from the Ganges ghats.
